• At Balena, we focus on designing and developing new materials that reach their end of life responsibly. We enable manufacturers to complete a fully circular process by returning materials to the ground safely, leaving no negative impact on compost quality, and all this without harming or polluting the land and the seas.

That is why Balena has taken the concept of circularity a step further, by introducing BioCycling.

What is BioCycling?

Enabled through our BioCir® material, products reach their end of life responsibly through a biological recycling mechanism, including full decomposition and biodegradation of the material back to the soil safely in an industrial compost facility, leaving no negative impact on compost quality, completing a fully circular process required.

Balena has partnered with network of industrial compost facilities across the globe to enable the full and safe decomposition and biodegradation of our BioCir® material back to the soil.

Once a BioCir® - based product reaches its end of use, the item is sent to an industrial compost facility and placed into compost. A combination of nature occuring bacteria, heat and moister breaks longer polymers into smaller fragments, which further break down into carbon dioxide, water and biomass.

These smaller fragments seamlessly biodegrade back into the earth and are consumed as an energy source for living soil bacteria, leaving behind no waste or contamination with no negative impact on the compost quality.

The product is sent to an industrial compost facility.

Once the product is put in the compost, longer polymers break down into smaller fragments via exposure to bacteria, heat, oxygen & moisture in the soil.

Smaller fragments break down to carbon dioxide, water and other naturally occurring minerals.

Biodegradation of these smaller fragments back into the earth. These fragments are digested and consumed as an energy source for living soil bacteria.

We are working towards a future where all consumer goods products, across different industries have a clear end of life solution. We are disrupting the material industry through innovating and developing cutting edge circular materials to replace hazardous, polluting, non-compostable plastics currently being used.
